Gareth Stevens . 2012. PLB $23.95; pap. $8.15; ebook $23.95. Gr 3-6 Using a graphic-novel format, this series recounts key events in the dramatic history of the American West. While Lewis and Clark, Alamo , and Little Bighorn provide information about well-known individuals (Sacagawea, General Custer, et al), Pony Express, Gold Rush , and Oregon Trail focus on lesser-known figures. Packed with well-rendered, colorful drawings, the stories are brimming with action. Sometimes the omissions are puzzling. In Lewis and Clark , Clark tells Sacagawea, "Goodbye, Sacagawea. We couldn't have done it without you." However, when the famous guide makes her appearances in the book, she is placed mostly in the background, giving the impression she contributed little to the mission. Though the stories are sketchy and lack source notes, they do make for exciting reading. Consider these for entertaining supplements.
The famous Pony Express is presented to readers in a new, exciting way. The story of brave riders who often risked their lives to deliver much-needed mail is one that will keep readers entertained as they learn new facts about this period in American history. Readers discover the heroic journey taken in the Old West on the longest Pony Express ride, and they see all of the dangers and triumphs unfold before their eyes in thrilling graphic-novel form. Even reluctant readers will be captivated by this book's accessible language, vivid drawings, and fast-paced storytelling.
