The latest in McMullan's diverting Myth-o-Mania series follows the ungodly journey Odysseus had to endure on his way home from Troy after the Trojan War. The narrator again is Hades, lord of the underworld, who offers his own spin ("the real, true story") on his fellow immortals and enduring Greek myths. Hades, of course, is the reasonable one as he deals with both supernatural disasters cluding storms caused by his brothers Zeus and Poseidon d more mundane concerns, such as the moodiness of his three-headed dog, Cerberus. Hades' snappy dialogue and McMullan's fast-moving narrative will sustain readers through our hero's arduous 10-year odyssey.

Narrator Hades, Greek god of the Underworld, tells of Odysseus's travails as they "actually" happened after the end of the Trojan War. The titular hero, who is traditionally portrayed as a witty thinker, is here presented as more buffoonish than usual, in keeping with the series' humorous slant on these ancient myths. This is no stuffy retelling but a fresh take on an oft-told tale.

The Trojan War is over, but now Odysseus has to find his way home to Ithaca . . . and in typical fashion, he's angered Poseidon enough that the sea-god has decided to make his journey miserable (if not impossible). But Hades has a soft spot for the long-gone warrior, so even if he's sworn to Poseidon he won't help Odysseus directly, he might be able to pull a few strings . . .
