This large-format book combines information about types of WWII propaganda with well-chosen photos, posters, and documents from the era. After a general introduction, separate chapters offer accounts of British, German, American, Soviet, and Japanese propaganda, while the final chapter considers France and Italy. Though it ends rather abruptly, this account of World War II propaganda is well researched, clearly written, and supported with good visual examples and short quotes from period sources. At least one color image appears on each double-page spread, along with sidebars and black-and-white illustrations. Besides the expected back matter, the book concludes with 17 short biographies and maps showing the war in Europe and Asia. From the World War II Sourcebook series, this colorful volume provides an accessible introduction to propaganda as it was shaded to meet each government's goals.

Each volume is divided into appropriate chapters, e.g., Soldiers begins with "Recruitment" and ends with "Demobilization," and Propaganda has chapters devoted to the campaigns of different nations. The text is broken up by numerous photos, poster reproductions, and sidebars that generally illuminate points in the main text but are occasionally repetitive. While Japan and the Asian theater are touched upon, the focus is largely on the West. Each volume includes the same back matter. The time line and maps of the European and Pacific theaters of combat will be best understood by readers with prior knowledge or through referencing other sources.

This series uses contemporary posters, images, and eyewitness accounts to examine how people experienced World War II away from the battlefield. It examines hot only life on the home front but also what it was like to do military service or to live under enemy occupation, as well as the influence of propaganda and espionage on the course of the conflict. This book looks at how governments tried to influence how people thought about the war. It describes "white" propaganda that encouraged home populations as well as "black" propaganda that set out to undermine the morale of the enemy. Book jacket.
