Sofia Martinez is outgoing, funny, and caring. Her large family enjoys going on adventures together and spending time with one another; it is evident that they are close. Jules (Freddie Ramos Takes Off, 2010) tells an endearing story of the Martinez family, who are shown taking trips to the beach, creating time capsules, and going to the store for school supplies. Young readers will enjoy getting to know Sofia and her family in this early chapter book, third in the Sofia Martinez series. The easy-to-read text includes Spanish words like si, mama, and gracias bolded in red, and a glossary appears at the end so that non Spanish speaking readers can learn the English translation. Smith's cartoonlike illustrations are fun and colorful, and they highlight Sofia's diverse family. While the Martinez family is intended to be Latino, their specific ethnicityis unclear. This lack of specificity could be taken as an assumption that Latinos are a homogeneous community. This could pair with Sonia Manzano's No Dogs Allowed! (2004), which has similar themes and centers around a Puerto Rican family.
