These new Do You Know? books (2 new titles), originally published in Canada and translated from the French, are not your typical animal books. The main text, at the bottom of each page, does present interesting facts about each animal. Visually, though, the text is very much an afterthought. Most of each spread is taken up with vivid, graphic-novel-style cartoons, complete with speech bubbles. These illustrations do not provide extra information about the animals. Instead, they riff jokingly, and often bizarrely, on the facts on the page. For example, Piranhas boasts a page discussing how quickly piranhas can devour their prey, upon which the school of piranhas spots a herd of cows in the water, and one piranha encourages the others to try to "beat our old record." These books may not be to everyone's taste, and they could be confusing for research if readers take the illustrations too literally. However, for readers who enjoy the lively illustrations and the offbeat humor, these books could be a fun and informative bridge from graphic novels and comics to nonfiction.
