Rosen / PowerKids Pr. 2012. PLB $21.25; pap. $8.25; ebook $21.25. Gr 2-4 These introductions cover a medley of topics, using eye-catching photos (the frozen body of a baby woolly mammoth, glowing lava flow streaming from an active volcano, and a space shuttle docking, etc.), clear diagrams, and text that clearly relays key scientific concepts. Glossary terms are in bold throughout and then concisely defined at the back of each volume. The titles all examine what was, what is, and what can be expected in the future. For example, Ice Ages covers not only the Ice Age, but also glaciers today and the "Next Ice Age." Unfortunately, Climate Change fails to make a clear distinction between climate and weathera page heading asks, "What Will the Weather Be Like Tomorrow?" and then proceeds to discuss climate change. Despite this oversight, the series is a useful resource, complete with a link at the back of each volume to a list of websites chosen and updated regularly by the publisher.
We have the many layers of gases that surround our planet to thank for making Earth a habitable place. This instructive volume explains how Earth's atmosphere warms the planet, moderates its diurnal and nocturnal temperatures, and protects it from harmful rays. The book discusses how Earth's atmosphere evolved over time and presents the ways scientists have learned about these changes. Special attention is paid to the changes in the atmosphere that people have caused over the last two centuries, making this a very timely and topical read.
