The fifth entry in the Friends for Keeps series finds Ida and her chums attending overnight camp, joined by Liz, Ida's former BFF who moved away before the series began. Liz would like to resume her friendships, but the others (especially Ida) refuse, teasing her unmercifully. Eventually the girls are won over by Liz's loyalty, particularly after they are tricked by two mean girls during an illicit midnight adventure. While the story is predictable and the characters clichéd, Bowe's ear for tween dialogue and her friendship concerns are spot-on, making this a perfect camp book or beach read.

Kirkus Reviews

Best friends and summer camp! What could be better? As Friends for Keeps protagonist Ida May prepares to leave for sleep-away camp for the first time, she remembers Elizabeth Evans, her first best friend, who moved away a year ago and failed to keep in touch. Getting over this loss was no picnic, but now Ida May has new friends--two best friends, in fact--and she is looking forward to a week of excitement and fun that they'll all experience together. Punchy sentences sprinkled liberally with kid-friendly language nicely capture Ida May's sense of anticipation, but it all comes to a screeching halt at camp when she encounters Elizabeth in the flesh. How can this be? Peer pressure, hurt feelings, mild ethical quandaries and middle-school group dynamics blend with arts-and-crafts, swimming and bonfires, as Ida May deals with Elizabeth's betrayal and decides if they can ever be friends again. Secondary plots dealing with bullying and crushes provide the finishing touches to this believable and accessible tale of friendship-on-the-rocks, and well-rounded characters raise it a notch above the usual series fare. Preteens will gobble up this girl-friendly depiction of the world of early middle school and its ensuing changes. A good choice for girls not quite ready to leave behind the innocence of childhood for the spills and thrills of adolescence. (Fiction. 8-12)

Elizabeth, Ida May's former best friend who moved away, joins the gang at camp--but Ida has a hard time forgiving Liz for not staying in touch and their rift affects the entire bunk. The characters in this series remain unmemorable, but the girls' week full of typical summer activities is diverting and the friendship struggles ring true.

Summer camp is more fun when you have Friends for Keeps!

It's Ida May's first time at sleepaway camp, and her two BFFs, popular Stacey and highly organized Jenna, are also coming along. But when they arrive at camp, their bunkmate is the last person Ida expected to ever see again: Elizabeth Evans, her last best friend who moved away before the start of this series. Ida was heartbroken when Liz didn't answer her letters, and now Liz won't even apologize. All the other girls are ready to welcome Liz back, but Ida just can't be the peacemaker this time. Not until she and Liz talk.

Chockablock with fourth-grade wisdom, laughter, jealousies--and apologies--this conclusion to the series is a must read for all Ida May fans.
