PreS-Gr 2 Though snow is still piled on the ground, budding trees and long tufts of grass poking through the drifts let readers know that spring has sprung at Sugar Hill Farm. Dad and big sister, Audrey, bundle up on their way to make maple syrup at the sugar shack. Little sister, Katie, eagerly rushes down the stairs, dresses and runs out the door with popsicle sticks Dad forgot to bring. Dad and his daughters collect their pails of tree sap and process the sap into syrup, despite Katie's repeated mishaps and blunders. Poor Katie just can't seem to do anything right, even getting lost in the woods at one point. At last, she is able to successfully help her family by making maple taffy lollipops, which she gladly shares. Watercolors are the ideal medium for this snowy woodland scenes and rosy-cheeked family. VERDICT A relatable family story and an brief introduction to how maple syrup is made. Laura Hunter, Mount Laurel Library, NJ
It's Spring at Sugar Hill Farm. Time to make maple syrup. "I want to go to the sugar shack too!" Kate cries. "Hmm," Dad hesitates. "Please!" "Okay," Dad gives in. "But you have to let Audrey and I do our work." Kate puts on her fuzzy jacket. She tugs the zipper. She tugs harder. It doesn't budge. "My zipper's stuck!" "Soon you will be old enough to work zippers every time," says Mom, giving her a hand. At last Kate is ready. She bursts out the door. "Wait!" Mom calls her back. "I forgot to give your Dad these. Don't lose them." Kate tucks the popsicle sticks safely in her pocket. She hurries to catch up by stepping into her sister's snow prints.

Spring has arrived at Sugar Hill Farm. Big sister Audrey is busy helping Dad as he makes maple syrup. Younger sister Kate also wants to contribute but it seems that she is just too little. Will she find a way to do her part?
