Before he became an FBI agent, Fox Mulder was a teenager dealing with the weight of his distant father's expectations for him. When children in Washington, D.C., are kidnapped, Mulder is reminded of his own sister's unresolved disappearance. He's determined to find the abductor, but who will believe a teenage investigator? Though it's sometimes hampered by its ties to the X-Files universe, a franchise old enough that Garcia's target audience might not be all that familiar with it, the story has good bones. She's very adept at writing teenagers, and high-school readers will identify as Mulder chafes at restrictions. The mystery is gripping and will definitely keep readers turning pages, though they might be disappointed by the lukewarm, albeit realistic, resolution. A bit of light romance and a solidly crafted 1979 setting add spice to the tale, even as the shadowy figures tailing Mulder water the story down. Those figures are straight out of the TV and movie series, but readers don't necessarily need to have watched either to follow along with the adventures of Mulder and his friends.
Horn Book
Two companion books reveal separate murder mysteries that left teenage Fox Mulder open to conspiracy theories and Dana Scully a scientifically minded skeptic, while also setting them on paths leading to the FBI. The stories read like episodes of the TV show with tight, quick-moving plots and a few twists and supernatural touches thrown in for good measure.
How did Fox Mulder become a believer? The X-Files Origins has the answers in this young adult, science-fiction origin story from the #1 New York Times -bestselling co-author of Beautiful Creatures , Kami Garcia. The X-Files Origins: Agent of Chaos explores the teen years of Fox Mulder, the beloved character depicted in the cult-favorite TV show The X-Files. His story is set in the spring of 1979, when serial murder, the occult, and government conspiracy were highlighted in the news. The book will follow Mulder as he experiences life-changing events that set him on the path to becoming an FBI agent. Seventeen-year-old Fox Mulder has bigger problems than applying for college. Five years ago, his younger sister disappeared from their home and was never heard from again. Mulder blames himself, and his mother blames his father, who has retreated into his top-secret work for the State Department. In Fox's senior year, his dad has moved him to Washington, DC--away from his friends on Martha's Vineyard. While Mulder doesn't mind the fresh start and not being known as "that kid with the missing sister," he's still obsessed with finding Samantha. So when a local boy turns up dead and another child is abducted, Mulder can't stop himself from getting involved. Could there be a link to his sister's case? As he uncovers the truth, Mulder and his friends find themselves on the trail of a serial killer. Sucked into a world where conspiracies, the occult, and madness overlap, Fox Mulder starts to believe. Don't miss more backstory in The X-Files Origins: Devil's Advocate , by Jonathan Maberry, about 15-year-old Dana Scully. An Imprint Book
