These installments in the Uncovering the Past: Analyzing Primary Sources series emphasize how primary sources shape our understanding of the past as well as the critical approaches some historians use when evaluating them. Each title addresses some of the challenges when using primary sources, such as accessibility or bias, and includes copious examples of primary sources related to its subject. Nuclear Weapons and the Arms Race contains quotes from interviews, images of letters and legislation, political cartoons, and propaganda posters. Though the discussion of primary sources isn't terribly well integrated into the coverage of the historical event at the heart of each volume, there are plenty of inset boxes with questions encouraging readers to think critically about some of the sources in each volume, which nicely loops back to discussions of how historians approach evaluating source material. With lots of visual interest and a critical-thinking focus, this series spotlights the importance of historiography while offering concise lessons on past events.
