Letters, numbers, shapes, and opposites are standard fare in board books. But patterns, part of our everyday lives, are often overlooked by the concept books for our littlest readers. This deceptively simple book begins with a white line on a bright-pink background and the text, "This is a line. A lot of lines make . . ." As children turn the page, they discover the answer: "Stripes!" This larger, bold text is set against thick, pink-and-white stripes. A wordless double-page spread follows, featuring an underwater scene with digitized retro artwork and, of course, plenty of stripes. The book continues in the same manner, highlighting how lots of squares make checks and an assemblage of circles makes polka dots. It also reveals patterns not typically seen in children's books, such as chevron, harlequin, and paisley. In each case, the wordless scene is different, from an argyle display at a circus to a plaid-inspired city view. A concluding foldout recaps all the patterns. A clever presentation that blends early math and art skills.

Have you learned your colors and shapes? Now it's time to learn patterns!

Stripes, polka dots, plaid, chevron, and more are featured in this first-ever patterns concept book that provides readers with the vocabulary to name what they see in the world around them. The ten most prevalent patterns are presented first as a single element (This is a circle ...), then as a pattern (... a lot of circles make polka dots!). Conceived by educators and illustrated in vivid candy-colored hues, this pitch-perfect introduction to patterns will engage the artistic, mathematical, and linguistic parts of every young child's mind.
