These books in the series Our Bill of Rights (7 titles) take an in-depth look at one or two amendments in the Bill of Rights. The books strike a balance between the historical context and general meaning of each amendment. The Right to Bear Arms, not surprisingly, focuses on the debate between gun-control advocates and opponents. The importance of the subjects is highlighted by the way the books are almost literally wrapped in the flag, with an American flag backdrop for each page of text. Each spread features its own title and an adequate stock photo or historical image. Many spreads also include either a "Know Your Rights!" or more general sidebar with additional facts or background information. These books are unlikely to spark deep interest in constitutional law, but they are useful resources for social-studies research.

Gr 6-8 The 230-year-old Bill of Rights continues to be remarkable and affecting. Its creation was a compromise between the Federalist and Anti-Federalist factions, who both felt the government should serve, not rule, its populace. Each amendment is placed in its proper historical context, providing readers an opportunity to understand the significance of these issues to the framers. Then, the specifics of the language are broken down to explain what it means to citizens today. Debates surrounding each amendment are also explored. VERDICT Concise writing and an amicable tone make these slim volumes an informative yet highly pleasant read, suitable for any collection
In 1791, the U.S. Congress ratified the first 10 amendments to the Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights. The Second Amendment states, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. With those words, the Founding Fathers laid the groundwork for a political and social touchstone that is still controversial after more than 200 years. Today, arguments over the true meaning and intention of the Second Amendment play out across our nation. With this book, readers go beyond the sensational headlines to explore the origins of the Second Amendment, both in a historical and contemporary context.
