Starred Review A companion volume to Breslin and Leiper's An Illustrated Treasury of Scottish Folk and Fairy Tales (2012), this handsome collection features characters such as selkies, witches, fairies, mermen, and the Loch Ness monster. Familiar tales include the one in which Irish giant Finn MacCool creates the Giant's Causeway and then, disguised as a baby, outwits his rival, Benandonner, a larger, stronger Scottish giant. While the introductions to individual stories sometimes indicate their origins ("an old clan tale from the northeast of Scotland"), no source notes are appended, and it's an unusual folktale that includes elements such as an appearance by Robert Louis Stevenson as a boy. But Scottish librarian and Carnegie Medal winning writer Breslin creates stories with undeniable child appeal. Her strong, graceful tales are well worth reading on their own account and especially as illustrated by Leiper. From the small, decorative pictures surrounding page numbers to large-scale views of landscape, monsters, and children, her haunting, mixed-media artwork appears throughout the book. In contrast to the generous use of white space and the subdued hues used in most of the illustrations, the occasional splash of rich, brilliant colors becomes all the more vivid and dramatic. A memorable collection of Scottish tales, highly recommended for reading aloud.
There's more to Scotland than Nessie! Other magical monsters have their stories told by a Carnegie-medal winner. Mysterious selkies, bad-tempered giants, devious fairies and even Loch Ness's most famous resident -- these are the mythical beasts of Scottish folklore. In the highly anticipated companion volume to the much-loved An Illustrated Treasury of Scottish Folk and Fairy Tales, award-winning children's author Theresa Breslin brings together a stunning collection of tales from across Scotland. Alternately humorous, poignant and thrilling, each story is brought to life with exquisite illustrations by Scottish fine artist Kate Leiper. A wonderful gift, this is a truly stunning book to be treasured for a lifetime and will be enjoyed by parents and grandparents as well as children.
