Laidlaw seeks to offer readers more than just the basics of elephant anatomy, life cycle, and social behavior. Rather, his aim is to spark a spirit of preservation among young readers for a species facing a complex set of threats. The case for conservation is built upon the up close and personal stories of five elephants who represent the daunting challenges facing their populations today. Here are the stories of Echo, a matriarch who gave birth to eight calves in the wild; Lucy, who lives in captivity in the cold climate of Canada; circus performer Tusko; Tarra, who thrived in an animal sanctuary; and Thandora, whose family was killed by poachers. Through these five stories, readers are introduced to the endless cast of people who have an impact on elephants' survival, including veterinarians, performers, animal dealers, hunters, and scientists. The stories are simultaneously inspiring and heartbreaking, highlighting elephants' uncanny memory and capacity for emotion, while still imparting loads of fascinating trivia.

Gr 4-6 This heartfelt book provides an overview of elephants as well as an argument for why these creatures are ill suited to captivity. Laidlaw has a reputation for animal rights education, and here again he calls upon readers to become elephant guardians. Well-chosen photographs and well-written text emphasize the importance of this cause. Laidlaw provides information on elephants (their family structure, body parts, and place in the ecosystem) and discusses how humans have intruded, poaching them as well as taking them from the wild for entertainment purposes. His description of the illegal ivory trade is especially heartbreaking, touching upon confiscated stashes that were burned by governments trying to squash the lucrative business. Laidlaw is critical of zoos and circuses, explaining that elephants' physical and mental health cannot be maintained properly in captivity, resulting in nightmarish conditions. He provides poignant details of the lives and struggles of five individual elephants inhabiting different settings: the wild, a zoo, a circus, and a sanctuary. There's also an elephant that has returned to the wild after living in captivity. The book is nicely organized, including suggestions of actions to take and a list of elephant interest groups. A solid source for reports on endangered species and an ideal jumping-off point for those seeking a volunteer project. Nancy Call, Santa Cruz Public Libraries, Aptos, CA

INTRODUCTION

You might be wondering why this book is entitled 5 Elephants. Like most books about elephants, this book is intended to provide you with some fascinating elephant facts and figures. I also want to tell you about some of the serious challenges that wild and captive elephants face. To truly understand elephants, though, we need to know more than just some basic information about how they function and live. We must also get to know them as individuals. We must learn their stories. That’s why I’ve called this book 5 Elephants. It features the stories of five famous elephants.
Two of those five elephants, Lucy and Tarra, are still alive today, and their stories continue to unfold. Tusko, Echo and Thandora, the three other elephants featured in this book, are no longer with us, but their stories and legacies live on. I hope you’ll be inspired by all of them.

Elephants are truly remarkable, unmistakable animals. Their huge size, giant ears, amazing trunk and incredible intelligence make them unique in the natural world.
We know a lot more about elephants today than we ever did in the past. The observations of scientists who have spent many years observing wild elephants tell us that elephants are highly active, complex, wide-ranging animals that play a key role in the ecosystems they inhabit.
Everyone recognizes elephants. They’ve been featured in stories, cartoons and movies; they’ve appeared in circuses, travelling shows and zoos. The elephant is one of the world’s most popular animals.
Throughout the years, I’ve visited some of the locations where wild elephants live, and I’ve been able to observe elephants in captivity all over the world. I’ve also been involved in many campaigns to help both captive and wild elephants. Through those campaigns, I’ve met many people who work tirelessly to help elephants. I call them the Elephant Guardians. They provide hope for elephants everywhere.

Elephants need our help—now more than ever. So read on, learn and become inspired, so that you, too, can become an Elephant Guardian.

It's a delicate balance, given the author's obvious passion for elephants and his zeal to protect them, to present the information in such a way that it inspires activism rather than alienates with proselytizing, and for the most part, he succeeds. Part of this success is due to the book's upbeat design, it's full of color photos and includes featurettes titled 'Good News for Elephants.' A worthy book that encourages ethical thinking about elephants. <br> -- Kirkus Reviews
