If you want to have friends, be a friend: this is the message powerfully delivered by this book, which centers on a storm and the upheaval it leaves in its wake. Badger is tidying his cozy home under an old oak tree when his friend Mouse appears at the window, warning that a terrible storm is on its way. Hedgehog, Bird, and Rabbit are all in a panic outside Badger's door. Badger springs into handyman action, toting his tools to his friends' homes. He strengthens the little red door to Rabbit's burrow, covers Hedgehog's lettuces with flower pots, builds a box around Bird's nest, and secures the ladder to Mouse's hole. The next morning, the friends discover that Badger's oak tree has been completely uprooted by the storm. The resolution, in which the friends work together to build Badger a new house and plant a tiny acorn to replace the fallen oak, showcases hard work and optimism. The bright paintings underscore the bright message.

PreS-Gr 2 Bad weather is on the horizon, and Badger is more than willing to help his forest friends prepare their homes against the storm. But when the rains start falling and the wind starts blowing, it is Badger's home that is demolished. Now that the storm has passed, Badger and his friends work together to rebuild a place for him to call home. A classic tale of friendship and teamwork comes alive with soft illustrations and lifelike expressions on the animals' faces. Chiew and Pedler work well together pairing text to image. VERDICT This is a great addition to any library, whether readers are looking for a lesson on teamwork or just an enjoyable story. Betsy Davison, Cortland Free Library, NY
