Starred Review ALA Booklist (Tue Nov 01 00:00:00 CDT 2022)

Starred Review Menéndez brings many of the impressive women from Latinitas (2021) to a younger audience with this beautiful board book. Saturated Old Holland watercolors create vivid contrasts between backgrounds of goldenrod, black, kelly green, and terracotta and each page's stylized image of a famous Latina, stencil-like in its clean lines and geometric patterns. Twenty-two such portraits fill the pages, which seek to introduce little ones to "the Latinitas / whose big dreams / paved the way / for your little feet." The variety of people featured is splendid, with a few well-chosen words in English and Spanish employed to capture each individual's talents. Engineer Antonia Navarro, activist Rigoberta Menchú Tum, author Isabel Allende, dancer Alicia Alonso, and gymnast Laurie Hernandez are a few of the notable figures readers will encounter, all of whom deserve their place in this gorgeous homage.

Toddler-PreS —Men&3;ndez's Latinitas is now accessible to the youngest readers in this beautiful board book highlighting 22 Latinitas who have worked hard to change the world and help others. Each inspiring woman receives a full board book page that includes her name and an illustration depicting her as a young girl, along with short sentences in English and Spanish describing what she has done to impact the world. Subjects include author Isabel Allende, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, archaeologist Zelia Nuttall, and activist Rigoberta Mench&0; Tum. The lovely color scheme features greens, yellows, and reds, with select words that identify each Latinita standing out in large font size and alternating colors. Young readers and their caregivers will love spending time carefully looking over each page, identifying objects in each illustration, and learning together about the inspirational woman featured. VERDICT An excellent addition to bilingual board book collections for children.—Selenia Paz
