A girl with a fiery temper rounds up a band of faithful sidekicks to combat a universe-ending calamity in this droll adventure through Norse mythology by Danish creator Tornager. When Gunhild warns that Ragnarok is coming, no one else at her Earth orphanage seems to care, so the 12-year-old fire giant sets off to become a god, seeking to stop the oncoming destruction herself. With her trusty fire salamander companion Newt, and her new human friend Liv—a kitchen hand she meets aboard a ship sailing for the realm of the gods—Gunhild travels to Asgard to find Odin and demand he transform her into a deity. But Odin proves difficult to track down, and after run-ins with Loki and Asgard gatekeeper Heimdall net only peril, Gunhild realizes that preventing the end of the world might be more difficult than she initially thought. Tornager’s bombastic, vibrantly saturated art portrays flashy fight sequences with a potent mixture of intense suspense and ludicrous humor. Frenzied activity abounds in this action-packed series starter, with a solidly earned cliffhanger ending to entice readers into the next volume. Ages 13–up. (Apr.)

Having been raised in a human orphanage, Gunhild is a fire jotun with humble roots who will stop at nothing to become a god and stop Ragnarok from happening. Most doubt her, including Thor, whose attention she garners at her graduation. Nevertheless, Gunhild sets off toward Asgard and, along the way, becomes entangled with the affairs of the gods. On her journey, she meets and befriends Liv, who is calm and supportive stark contrast to Gunhild's boisterous and fiery energy. This adventure is full of colorful art and characters. Tornager brings freshness to his rendition of Norse mythology by redesigning the pantheon, but he still imbues it with enough familiarity for fans of the classic stories. The interior art is fully colorized, which is different from most manga, but Tornager masterfully uses solid coloring and coordinating palettes to immerse readers fully in every page. Fans of One Piece and other epic adventures will enjoy going along with Gunhild for this ride.

Could you follow your dreams if the whole world was against you? Gunhild dreams of becoming a real-life god, and everyone everywhere thinks it’s a terrible idea made up by a petulant twelve-year-old.

In the world of Norse mythology, humans revere the mighty gods and fear the mystical, nature-wielding Jotuns, and Gunhild is a fire Jotun. Abandoned by her own kind and raised in a human girls’ orphanage, Gunhild wishes to prove to her peers that she’s more than a little troublemaker. Every step of the way, it becomes clear that Gunhild must fight for what’s right and follow her own sense of justice, seeing as no one else will fight for her.

Gunhild’s quest leads her to meet all the famous gods she’s heard about in schools, like Odin and Thor, though the one she’s most interested in is the mischievous Jotun god Loki, who’s chained up in a cave hidden in a location known only by the gods.

Her travels lead mainly to many foes, but a few enemies become friends, persuaded by Gunhild’s unwavering determination and burning passion for her own cause. Being a tiny Jotun against a big, powerful world, Gunhild must fight smart and learn a trick or two from Loki to earn the title of godhood.

Certainly, Gunhild will stop at nothing to forge her own fantastic path and make her dream come true.

Gunhild is rated Y for Youth, recommended for ages 10 and up.
