K-Gr 2 —Two animal friends, who are not quite the same, collaborate in their own way to achieve the goal of enjoying the sweet taste of honey. The honeyguide bird flies around during the day in search of trees with honey. The honey badger, a predominantly nocturnal creature who defends itself from predators, depends on the honeyguide to take him toward the precious sweet treat. Through her characteristic poetry, L&5;zaro briefly introduces the mutualistic relationship between these two animals that live in the African savannas. The rhyming text and illustration color palette guide readers through the day and night life of this unnamed "diverse and old continent" and could encourage them to find out more about this habitat and ecosystem. A note from the author is included, but this title could have been enhanced by a bibliography and other back matter usually found in informational texts. VERDICT This book is a reprint of a 2013 edition, with a new illustrator, and it is a suggested purchase for elementary science or language arts classrooms.—Sujei Lugo

In the wild, all animals struggle to survive. Many achieve this by living with those of its same species. But some know that the best way to stay alive is to approach other kinds of animals, sometimes very different, to find food, shelter or a safe place. In this type of relationship, the animals help each other to meet their needs, both obtaining benefit, like two good friends. Scientifics call this relationship mutualism, and this book presents a fascinating example, told in verse with the magic and rigor that characterize the informative texts of the incomparable Puerto Rican writer Georgina Lazaro.
