Appreciating art is one thing. Creating it is another. This large, colorful book combines the two, introducing children to 10 artworks depicting animals, and challenging them to make their own versions inspired by the originals. These range from an Egyptian tomb fresco identified as Cattle Brought for Inspection (c.1350 BCE) to the galvanized steel statue Heavy Horse (1997) by sculptor Andy Scott. Other artists featured include Dürer, Stubbs, Klee, and Warhol. Projects include a frescolike painted plaster plaque, an animal sculpture made of garden wire, and a painted paper mask of a lion, based on a painting by Rubens. Each hands-on project includes an illustrated list of materials needed as well as step-by-step instructions, with most steps shown in separate photos. The direction "make two eye holes in the mask using a sharp pencil and a lump of sticky tack" needs further elaboration or an illustration, but in other places the text shows a practical concern for kids' safety. A good source of ideas for art teachers as well as budding artists.
