Fourth-grade friendship rules are complicated. How do you add one friend without subtracting another? In her journal, Daphne works through the intricacies of school relationships. She would like to expand her circle of good friends to include Imogene, who is sweet and draws fun math doodles, but Imogene is already friends with Darla. As Daphne's good friend Kaylee explains in a list of friendship rules, Darla is a gatekeeper friend; thus, to befriend Imogene, Daphne must first become "fake friends" with Darla, who is snobby and mean. Stylistically, Moss' new book resembles her Amelia's Notebook series, with handwritten text, illustrated lists, and line art. Daphne is likable and genuine, if a tad naive. The story reads quickly, and while the tone remains light, Daphne takes an unflinching look at friendship and the question of whether it is OK to use other people if we think our intentions are pure. With its illustrated diary format and universal topic, the book will find a ready audience.
