The series title is Last-Minute Science Projects with Biomes, and these 15 eco-themed activities are arranged by estimated time for completion om "20 minutes or less" to "several days." With one that involves examining owl pellets and several needing snow as possible exceptions, the experiments require easily available materials. Gardner opens with a capsule overview of taiga climate and biota, goes on to lay out the scientific method, and then presents step-by-step instructions for projects that include simply identifying northern boreal regions on a biome map, measuring soil pH, estimating "board feet" in a tree trunk, and taking plaster casts of animal tracks. Each entry includes a materials list, labeled diagrams, expected results, explanations of relevant processes or principles, and one or more quick suggestions for additional experiments. Science fair entrants will have to design their own displays around these kernels, but the author helps out with background information on this distinctive biome and leads to further resources, as well as on-target boilerplate advice for impressing judges.

The activities in these books are mainly short projects that demonstrate principles of physical science and mathematics within the context of biomes. Students procrastinating over the completion of their science-fair projects will find what they need to conduct the experiments, including illustrations of the experimental steps and background on scientific method and ecology that can round out their reports. No energy to spare? This book is here to help. Readers will discover how cool temperatures help to keep a taiga wet, and the relationship between a taiga animal's wide feet and pressure. Each experiment follows the scientific method, and can be completed in an hour or less. Many experiments also include ideas for more detailed science fair projects.
