Pat Hutchins’s birthday is on June 18th.
Beloved author-illustrator Pat Hutchins was born in Yorkshire, England, in 1942, one of seven children. She won a scholarship to art school when she was sixteen, and after graduation worked as a commercial artist in London. After marrying illustrator Laurence Hutchins, she moved for a time to New York City. There, she presented her work to publishers and began her career as a children’s author, starting with Rosie’s Walk, a 1968 American Library Association Notable Book. In Britain, she was the 1974 winner of the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal for her book The Wind Blew.
Pat has written a number of novels and picture books over the years, sometimes in collaboration with her husband. She also had a recurring role in a popular British children’s television show, Rosie and Jim. Her most recent book, due to release August 2016, is Where, Oh Where, Is Rosie’s Chick? Pat has two children and lives in London.
